The AKAI EWI 3020 and 3020m have been sitting in a storage room at home for a long time.
I haven’t used them since before I moved into my current house, so I haven’t blown on them for over 15 years now.
I was wondering if I could do something at home during this period of telecommuting with the Corona disaster, so I left them alone.
I decided to take out my EWI 3020 and 3020m.
EWI 3020 & 3020m, which I haven’t put out in a long time, not working!
I connected the EWI3020 to the 3020m and tried to turn it on. The power came on.
The message “Battery Low” appeared for a moment in the liquid crystal part.
Then, I hold EWI3020 and try to play it.
The sound doesn’t come out ・・・・. Is the reaction of the sensor bad, or is the setting wrong?
I don’t know because I played it after a long time.

It’s not quite right. The sound is not what I expected.
When I recalled the memory from the message “Battery Low”, I remembered that EWI3020m has a battery directly attached to the board, and when the battery runs out, the sound source memory information which I added is lost.
Checking the contents and batteries of the EWI3020m
So I decided to take a look at the contents of EWI3020m. I remove two screws on the side and one screw on the back, and look at the contents of EWI3020m. The first meeting. I am thrilled.

Oh…. It’s more scant than I expected. But it’s heavy, so the case must be well made. It must be. But I wonder how compact it would be if I were to recreate the same thing with today’s technology…. I wonder how compact it would be to recreate the same sound.
Well, I looked for the battery and found it easily. Right in the middle of the board above, in what looks like a yellow streak about 2cm long.
I looked closer and saw that it really was a CR2032 with a vertical terminal attached straight to it! Thinking that the sound must be going wrong because this battery was dead, I decided to replace it.
However, I decided to change the batteries to replaceable ones, because it would be too much trouble to change them again when they run out again. I went to Amazon.com and ordered a socket for CR2032, I only need one, but I bought a set of 5.

The message “Battery Low” does not appear as before…. Since I changed the battery, I reset it, and connected EWI3020 to it and blew into it, and sound came out firmly!
It is OK at first because there seems to be no problem except the part where the sound did not come out.
Connecting the EWI3020m to the MacBookPro2020
This is the end of the battery exchange, but because I wanted to do something with Mac for relaxation in between work, I connected it with MacBookPro and tried to make it sound like another sound source.
I used a USB MIDI connection cable and IFW which can make sounds similar to T-SQUARE’s Treasure Island and TRUTH as another sound source for free.
The EWI3020m is set up under my desk in my work room, and I can play it at any time.
