Do you go on a New Year’s visit to a shrine?
This time, I would like to introduce you to a shrine that I would like everyone to visit in Kyoto for Hatsumode.
New Year’s visit to Kyoto with a zodiac sign
The zodiac sign for 2019 is the wild boar.
In fact, did you know that there is a shrine in Kyoto with guardian boars instead of guardian dogs?
That’s the shrine I’m going to introduce here, Go’o Shrine.
The shrine is located along Karasuma-dori, west of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, in front of the Hamagurimikado gate of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and is dedicated to Lord Wake Kiyomaro and his younger sister, Princess Wake Hiromushi. The shrine was originally located in a different place, but was moved to its current location during the Meiji era.
Why are wild boars used as guardian dogs at Goh Shrine?
Originally, it seems that the guardian dogs were not wild boars, but a statue of a sacred boar (koma boar) was dedicated in the precincts by a worshiper.
The reason why these guardian boars were dedicated is because when Lord Kiyomaro was carried away to Osumi Province (now Kagoshima) by Michikami, his legs were so weak that he could not stand up.
His legs were so weak that he could no longer stand, but a herd of wild boars appeared.
However, a herd of wild boars appeared and with their protection, he was able to stand and walk again.
Because of this, Go’o Shrine is regarded as a guardian deity of feet and legs, and has charms for feet and legs, so it is often visited by people with bad feet and legs.
Access to Go’o Shrine
From JR Kyoto Station, take the subway Karasuma Line to Marutamachi Station, and walk north along Karasuma Dori for about 7 minutes.
